IEEE UK&I Section were honoured to have IEEE President, José M. F. Moura and IET President, Peter William Bonfield as speakers at the 2019 Christmas Lecture. Professor Moura spoke on “Data (Big), Computing (Fast), and Algorithms (Learning) – The New Opportunities for a Bright Future” and Dr Bonfield, “Perspectives on Engineering and Technology for the Future”.
Professor Erol Gelenbe FIEEE FACM FIFIP FIET FRSS, was awarded the honour of Commander of the National Order of Merit of France by President Macron in May 2019, for services to research and higher education.

The UK and Ireland Section is delighted to announce that Professor Izzet Kale has been successful in the recent ballot to elect the Vice Chair for 2020-22. Professor Kale is currently, College and Institute Research Director and Digital Industries and Director, Applied DSP and VLSI Research Group, College of Design, Creative and Digital Industries at the University of Westminster London, UK, which he founded in the late 1980s.
Members of the United Kingdom and Ireland Section are invited to stand for election to the position of Section Chair from January 1st, 2022 following 2 years as Vice-Chair from January 1st, 2020.

Professor Alwyn Seeds is to receive the 2018 Distinguished Educator Award of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). This award is given to a distinguished educator in the field of microwave engineering and science who exemplifies the special human qualities of the late Fred J. Rosenbaum who considered teaching a high calling and demonstrated his dedication to the MTT-S through tireless service.
