IEEE’s roots go back to 1884 when electricity became a major influence in society. In the 140 years since then, IEEE members and their colleagues, supported by IEEE conferences, publications, standards, educational offerings, recognitions, and professional communities, have produced innumerable discoveries and inventions that have led to the world we live in.
From humble beginnings, IEEE has grown into a global institution, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.
To celebrate IEEE’s 140th anniversary, I encourage you to visit ieee.org to read Inspiring Technology: 34 Breakthroughs, which offers just a selection of the milestones to which the past nearly century and a half have been witnessed. I hope you find these stories both a fitting celebration of our community’s successes and an inspiration for IEEE’s next 140 years.
