Former UK and Ireland Section Chair Launches First Generic Global Standard on Value Based (ethical) Engineering for Autonomous Intelligent Systems

On September 15th 2021 the first generic global technology ethics standard, IEEE 7000-2021 “IEEE Standard Model Process for Addressing Ethical Concerns during System Design” was launched.

Former IEEE UK and Ireland Section Chair, Prof Ali Hessami chaired the P7000 Working Group as well as leading the Risk Management Sub-Group and contributing to the design and risk management parts of the standard.

Commenting on the launch, Prof Hessami commented:

Value-based Engineering (VbE) is at the heart of IEEE 7000-2021 standard and provides researchers, developers and operators with a highly practical approach to master the value-based challenges of their product/system design for optimal social benefit and impact.

The VbE methodology provides a broader lens to proactively consider potential value harms and benefits associated with product, service or systems design thus considerably enhancing the fitness for purpose in the context of application.
