In Memoriam: Emeritus Professor Peter Excell, IEEE Senior Life Member

Tributes have been paid to distinguished Emeritus Professor and IEEE Senior Life Member Peter Excell who has passed away after a short illness.

Peter Excell received a BSc degree in Engineering Science from the University of Reading in 1970, a PhD from the University of Bradford in 1980 and a DSc from Wrexham Glyndwr University and the University of Chester in 2020.

Until 2007, he was an Associate Dean of research with the School of Informatics at the University of Bradford and Emeritus Professor of Communications at Wrexham Glyndwr University, where he was the Deputy Vice Chancellor until 2015.

He was a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered IT Professional and he published over 500 articles. His academic interests were concentrated in the areas of wireless technologies, electromagnetics and antennas, plus broader interests in future communications applications, and technological evolution.

Peter Excell was IEEE Life Member, a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the British Computer Society, and the Higher Education Academy; and a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the Bioelectromagnetics Society, and the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society.

Following his retirement, in his role as Emeritus Professor, Peter continued to be an ambassador for Wrexham Glyndwr University and was awarded a Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales, as well as a Higher Doctorate from the University of Chester in 2020.

Professor Excell worked on a range of topics linked to electronics, communications and computing, among others, and during a research career spanning decades, he built a network of colleagues around the world; many of whom had begun their work under his guidance.

Peter Excell is survived by his wife, Dianne, and children Matthew and Charlotte to which IEEE UK and Ireland Section sends its condolences.
