Message from UK and Ireland Section Chair, Prof Paul Cunningham | Call for Volunteers and Host Organisations

Dear Colleagues,

I wish you and your families a Happy, Peaceful, Prosperous and Productive New Year.

We are fortunate to have an active, dedicated cohort of volunteers who are contributing their time, enthusiasm and expertise, and I would like to thank them for their commitment and service. Motivations vary from building working relationships with their peers to simply giving back to the technical and engineering community. Volunteering within IEEE has provided them with opportunities to build professional and personal relationships, expand their technical knowledge and gain management and leadership skills. You can identify some of these volunteers who are currently serving as Section Officers and Chairs of Chapters, Technical Councils and Local Groups, many of whom started their volunteer journey as students or young professionals.

Supporting existing and prospective IEEE Members across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales at different stages of their careers, requires significant commitment from volunteers. I would like to ask you for your help in this regard.

Call for Volunteers

It is essential to create a volunteer pipeline of talent for the future. We are looking for individuals with different backgrounds and levels of experience, who wish to volunteer.

As over 57% of all IEEE Members in our Section are members of one or more Societies or Councils, volunteering at Chapter level could be a good place to start. Please reach out to the relevant Chapter Chair and they will be very happy to hear from you.

If you have a particular technical interest, joining a Technical Council or Local Group might be worth exploring.

Is there a Student Branch at your university where you could contribute, or are you a young professional looking for opportunities? Are you an experienced professional interested in mentoring talent? We have dedicated Section Officers who will be very happy to support and guide you.

Call for International Conferences

Our Section has a proud history of organising and supporting impactful scientific and technical conferences and workshops.

If you identify an opportunity for the Section to host a prestigious international conference, please reach out to me so we can discuss how we can provide you with support in a timely manner.

Call for Host Organisations

During 2024 and 2025, one of my key goals is to facilitate opportunities for members to access face to face technical meetings and networking opportunities, as well the opportunity to meet and interact with Section Officers and Chapter Chairs.

If your organisation or institution is interested in hosting either a Section Meeting, technical meeting or networking event in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England or Wales, please reach out to me, so we can identify what type of event (e.g. speaker or panel) and topic(s) would best serve your local community.

As Chair of IEEE UK and Ireland Section for 2024 and 2025, I very much look forward to serving our community with your support, so that we can continue to both grow and retain members at all stages of their professional and personal careers.
