Part of managing intellectual property (IP) – especially in large organisations – is the process of evaluating what to do with each innovation in a portfolio. Managers can use a matrix with weighted factors such as viability, marketability, protectability, and activity such as citations, to put all the options in perspective.
The results provide essential support to management’s decision-making where actions to handle the IP may include: develop further in-house, form a joint venture, donate, or publish the IP. Within each of these management actions, the essential terms and conditions are also discussed.
