PES Webinar | Clean Energy, the Circular Economy, and the Age of Artificial Intelligence for SmartGrid Systems by Prof Marcelo Godoy Simões

The UK and Ireland PES Chapter will co-host the webinar: “Clean Energy, the Circular Economy, and the Age of Artificial Intelligence for SmartGrid Systems” in conjunction with the Student Branch Chapter of the University of Sheffield.

Abstract

During this talk, we will discuss how Smart Grid systems powered by renewable sources of energy provide sustainability. In addition, we will consider how Clean Energy and the Circular economy are driving Smart Grid technology and shaping Smart Cities.

We will have a dialogue on how power electronics and power systems can be unified towards a research and educational approach. This talk will discuss the grid performance and load metrics for intelligent transmission and distribution of user-based analysis and modelling. Furthermore, we will look at how the application of real-time hardware-in-the-loop, computer-based design can facilitate instantaneous power interaction through the analysis of power quality, harmonics, and any imbalances in a Smart Grid system.

We will cover fundamentals of Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks and Deep Learning for big data analytics of power systems. The audience will have the opportunity to reflect on how the electrical engineer of the 21st century uses comprehensive analysis, modelling, and real-time based simulation skills to design a modern, secure Smart Grid that is powered with Clean Energy.

About the Speaker

Marcelo Godoy Simões is a professor in Electrical Engineering and IEEE Fellow Pioneer in the application of artificial intelligence in control of power electronics systems, motor drives and renewable energy systems.

Marcelo Godoy Simões received a B.Sc. degree and an M.Sc. degree from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, with a Ph.D. degree from The University of Tennessee, USA, in 1985, 1990 and 1995 respectively. He received his D.Sc. Degree (LivreDocência) from the University of São Paulo in 1998. Dr. Simões was a US Fulbright Fellow with Aalborg University, Institute of Energy Technology (Denmark). He is an IEEE Fellow with a citation: “for applications of artificial intelligence in control of power electronics systems.”

Prof. Simões is a pioneer to apply neural networks and fuzzy logic in power electronics, motor drives, and renewable energy systems. His fuzzy logic-based modelling and control for wind turbine optimization are used as a basis for advanced wind turbine control, and it has been cited worldwide. His leadership in modelling fuel cells is internationally and highly influential in providing a basis for further developments in fuel cell automation control in many engineering applications.

Prof. Simões made substantial and lasting contribution of artificial intelligence technology in many applications, power electronics and motor drives, fuzzy control of wind generation system, such as Fuzzy Logic based waveform estimation for power quality, Neural Network based estimation for vector-controlled motor drives and integration of alternative energy systems to the electric grid through AI modelling-based power electronics control. His current research interests intersect the areas of power electronics, power systems, power quality, smart-grid, and renewable energy systems.
