UK’s Military Tracked Vehicles, Past, Present and Future

Hear Dr Marcus Potter from BAE Systems explain how tracked military vehicles have evolved to meet current needs. Learn about the engineering design challenges such as – mobility, range, economy, ride quality, reliability, braking etc.

Marcus will cover a wide range of issues that relate to tracked military vehicles which will include the transportation of vehicles by rail, air, road and sea. He will cover practical operational matters such as military load classification, bridging, trackway and tactical needs.

The design of military vehicles is complex and Marcus will explain the need to balance top speed, ability to move cross country, maintain terrain accessibility, swimming/fording, gradient climbing capability and minimise the crew fatigue. The requirements for acceleration, braking, range, gap crossing, vertical step, operational environment, temperature, altitude, humidity, vibration, noise and ground pressure will be outlined.

A further outline of future power generation will cover areas such as low noise and vibration, efficiency, reliability, lower maintenance, range, energy storage methods and cost.

Briefly covered will be types of tracked vehicles suspension and the maximising of wheel travel and control, lateral movement, road holding, ride quality and comfort and how these relate to gun targeting.  These will be compared with the design requirements for commercial vehicles.

Marcus will cover steering: – skid steer mechanisms, independent drive, geared steering, clutch/brake, braked/controlled differential, double differential, articulated steering, BvS10, curved track steering, independent power source drive and two engines, electric motors and hydrostatic motors.  Finally Marcus will end his lecture with some future concepts of ideas that may take military tracked vehicles into the future.

About the speaker

Dr Marcus Potter is Head of Mobility at BAE Systems, Land (UK). He graduated with a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Sheffield University and also attained a PhD in “Parametric Modelling and Analysis of Solid Polymer Fuel Cells” from Loughborough University. After an initial career in Aerospace working on diverse projects such as F-35 Lightning and Airbus A-380 he moved to BAE Systems as the Engineering Manager for the Bulldog Armoured Personnel Carrier.  In 2010 he became the Head of Mobility and is responsible for the design & integration of all powertrain and running gear modifications on all BAE Systems Land (UK) Vehicles. Marcus manages a multi-disciplined team of engineers to deliver a range of mobility related tasks.
