This presentation discusses the profound technological changes that have taken place during the last 2 decades, the main characteristics being erosion and convergence. It is pointed out that the advances are at the edge of traditional disciplines and the connections between different disciplines are becoming the core of the new technologies, in a not multi, not inter but a transdisciplinary manner. It is argued that convergence fuels convergence and results in emergence.
Four distinct phases of industrial revolution, culminating in Industry 4.0 are discussed. The emerging paradigms of big data and cyber physical systems, supported by new disruptive advances both on software and hardware sides, as well as the cross-fertilization of concepts and the amalgamation of information, communication and control technology driven approaches are pointed out to. The changes observed in the industry are then discussed, together the developments in the area of smart products.
The importance of big data and data analytics for industry is pointed out to, together with the necessity to move from the quest “what is happening?” to “what is likely to happen?” and finally to “what should be done?” The presentation concludes with the brief discussions of circular economy and possible transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0.
About the Speaker
Okyay Kaynak received the B.Sc. degree with first class honours and Ph.D. degrees in electronic and electrical engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK, in 1969 and 1972 respectively.
From 1972 to 1979, he held various positions within the industry. In 1979, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, where he is presently a Professor Emeritus, holding the UNESCO Chair on Mechatronics. He is also a 1000 People Plan Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China. He has hold long-term (near to or more than a year) Visiting Professor/Scholar positions at various institutions in Japan, Germany, U.S., Singapore and China. His current research interests are in the fields of intelligent control and mechatronics. He has authored three books, edited five and authored or co-authored more than 400 papers that have appeared in various journals and conference proceedings.
Dr. Kaynak is a fellow of IEEE and has just completed his 3-year term as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. Additionally, he is on the Editorial or Advisory Boards of a number of scholarly journals. He has recently (in 2016) received the Chinese Government’s Friendship Award and Humboldt Research Prize.
Dr. Kaynak is active in international organisations, has served on many committees of IEEE and was the president of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society during 2002-2003.
